Cool, calm and collected, Wade “Ironwade” Marrs of Willow, Alaska, is settling in as one of the most exciting dog sled racers in the sport. 2017 is Marrs’ sixth year running the Iditarod. He has finished all of his Iditarod race attempts, except for the 2012 race, when he scratched in Ophir due to concerns for some of his dogs.
In Marrs’ first run of the Iditarod in 2009, he placed 47th out of 67 mushers. After a two-year break and the 2012 scratch, Marrs finished 32nd in 2013. The stats from 2013 until now paint a very clear picture of Marrs’ direction and ability. In 2014 he cut his finish placement in half to 16th. In 2015 he finished 8th. In 2016, 4th. Marr’s has effectively cut down his finish times in large chunks every year. One could only conclude and expect for Marr’s to finish at least 2nd this year at his current rate.
Marrs’ improvement from year to year shows an impressive amount of dedication and ability to learn and execute new strategies. His finish time in 2016 would have been good enough to win 39 of the 43 total Iditarod races in history.
The second half of the 2017 Iditarod race should be very interesting. Marrs has been leading the pack for a good portion of time. He is running fast as well as keeping distance between his team and last year’s champion, Dallas Seavey. Marrs, Kaiser, Zirkle, Petit, Ulsom, Royer and the two Seavey’s have strong teams and are all in contention to win.
